Welcome to Upfaders

Upfaders is Yorks groundbreaking youth music technology project. Since 2008 we have been providing vital opportunities for young modern musicians in York who are facing a disadvantage – Djing, MCing, Music Production, Artistic development, performances, mentoring, musical collaboration and improvisation. Upfaders is a trusted, viable pathway back into training and socialisation for any young person, no matter how severe their disadvantage or support needs. We support people who have a passion for music aged 13-25, and have different strands to our delivery to suit different levels of interest, support and ability. Upfaders is delivered in partnership with Door84.
Upfaders gives young people regular access to high quality support, training and equipment that is essential to musical and personal progression – we are fully equipped with the very latest tools and our staff team are experts in both music and in engaging and supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable people to empower them to gain musical and tech skills, confidence and increased wellbeing.
We are fully funded to offer a free service to those who will benefit most and we have the support of a strong partner network that includes many key agencies supporting young people locally – CAMHS, Youth Justice, MIND, Young Peoples Services are just a few of our partner agencies. We believe that anyone with a passion for music can achieve and attain given appropriate challenges and proper support. Some of our best outcomes are when working with people facing the most severe disadvantage – music technology is dynamic, rewarding and accessible with modern tech. With high quality training anyone can quickly gain skills that will allow them to fully express their individual musical ideas.
Our range of services is designed to offer something for every young person and values progression within our own organisation and onto other providers, who we work closely with. Our structure is modelled so that there is a natural flow between different elements meaning that we can offer sustained engagement that encourages musical success and personal development. For exammple, a person might be made aware of our service at an outreach session, then attend a few surgery sessions to explore further, this might then ignite a passion that motivates them to complete an intensive project where they will perform at our gigs. After this they will have their own progression plan which can be actioned through continuing surgery sessions, and attending our gigs as a repeat performer or as an audience member. They may even join our members committee (steering group) We have strong evidence to suggest that it is this longer intervention and activity that gives stronger, permanent outcomes and gains.

From off-site/community taster sessions to individual sessions to open jams to intensive accredited projects; we have set out to create a viable pathway for any young person to make their transition to higher acheivement and performance.

Please see the tabs at the top of this page for more information about each element of Upfaders – this will help you to judge which element is best for the young person you are supporting and how to get them involved.
